Count the rows in a CSV file

Drop the file: the exact row count appears as soon as it's read.

An exact count, header excluded

The number shown is the number of data rows, without the header line. Empty lines are ignored, and line breaks inside quoted fields don't inflate the count — something that line-counting tools such as wc -l get wrong.

Count per category

The total is rarely the end of the question. How many rows per country, per status, per month?

SELECT country, COUNT(*) AS rows
FROM data
GROUP BY country
ORDER BY rows DESC;

Count only the rows matching a condition:

SELECT COUNT(*) FROM data WHERE status = 'paid';

Count distinct values, such as unique customers:

SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT customer) FROM data;

Check an export is complete

Comparing the row count of an export with the number your source system reports is the quickest sanity check before sending a file on. Column summary goes one step further and shows, for each column, how many cells are actually filled.

Is the header counted?

No. The first line is used as column names and is not counted.

How long does it take for a big file?

Roughly the time needed to read the file: on a typical laptop, a few seconds per 100 MB.

Can it count rows in several files?

One file at a time for now: open each file in turn.
